Jeff's shed- Melbourne Quilt and Craft Fair
For those who do not receive my newsletter, I am not doing the Jeff's shed show at the end of July again this year. Due to the flood in the shop earlier in the year which necessitated me being out of the shop for almost 2 months, I really need all the catch up time I can get to finish drawing up patterns for several of my new designs, including Stage 3 of "Picnic Time For Bears" mystery quilt. Sydney Quilt Market
I have just come back from the Sydney quilt market where I was a customer at that trade show. I have purchased many new designs as well as new products, which will appear on my blog soon. I have brought some ( limited) home with me, but the others will arrive shortly.....could be a few weeks, as most of these designers are doing the Darling Harbor Show- (our Jeff's shed equivalent) These include designers I currently stock as well as new designers. shop scheduled re opening
Li’l Bloke’s :-Update to reopening.
I have to change my scheduled re opening date from Friday of this week to hopefully Wednesday 16th.This is due to 2 reasons.
1. The carpet goes down in the three back rooms on Friday so a lot of things are just piled in the main shop with nowhere to go, and the 2nd storage facility is to be emptied and stock returned to the shop on Tuesday.2. I have been a bit hampered due to an op on my leg yesterday so am unable to put things back in place just yet, so it would be unfair to have anyone else working in the shop with things absolutely everywhere.
Please let everyone (you know) know that I am/will back at 163 View St with all the same contact details. I am quite excited about the new look the shop will have.

February 2011 Newsletter:- March 3rd - better late than never !!!
The big news is, after emptying out the entire shop due to the water (and mud) throughout, waiting 3 weeks for solicitors to produce a lease, much frustration hard work & soul searching, I have decided yesterday to
“relocate” back to my existing premises.
There is heaps of cleaning to do, and of course getting my stock back from several storage facilities, painting shelves etc, but I hope to be able to operate (albeit in a limited form) by Friday 11th.
Please check my blog for any change to this date.

Tip for this newsletter: Buying fabric:
So often people come into my shop wanting to match fabrics to finish off a project...and yes they come without a sample of the fabric they need !!!! Don’t cringe !!! You are not alone. Most people do it. If other shop owners are like me...and I am pretty sure they are...they would know as soon as they see a sample whether they stock that fabric. It’s so much easier to show it and ask, than you browsing and not seeing the fabric when it could be there after all.
Help at hand......Something I did before I had a shop was to have a little fabric journal where I kept a sample of the fabric, how much I bought, and where I bought it. Made things easy....but don’t wait years !!!
Another idea is to photocopy the fabrics for a particular project onto a sheet and take that with you when purchasing fabric.

Feb's fury
Important news
Tonight I got a call from the owners of my building. It was a desperate voice at the other end, after having a 20 minute storm in the town. You guessed it...the shop has had mud all through and fabric close to the floor has been ruined. The Malayan restaurant (within my building) has also been severely damaged. I am not sure what will be happening with Li’l Bloke‘s but will keep you posted..... Have just contacted my insurance company so will hopefully know soon what the outcome is.
The good news is, that the 2nd stage of Picnic Time For Bears which is due to go out this coming week is all safe and sound. Just have to find somewhere to work !!

where did 2010 go ??????
Apologies: Due to another water event at the shop ( must be about the 8th or 9th in 10 years), all my Christmas holiday time was spent ( along with hubby Trev) shifting the loads of furniture and storage tubs in the back store rooms here, then there, then somewhere else ( as limited space meant no room to turn around). Then great friend & helper Jean has spent countless hours with me sorting etc as we try to get everything back in its best position. Fortunately the only things damaged were countless drawings for future designs, and the carpet where the water had been stealthily & silently leaking in over time. Needless to say I start the year behind the 8 ball as they say...without having my 2nd block of “Picnic Time” finished, and several patterns still on the drawing board. The good news is that my bronchitis (which has lasted for about 6 months) seems to have cleared away with the removal of the mouldy carpet. Thank you to all those who have made phone contact and commented on the huge improvement in my ability to talk normally.

Tip for this newsletter: Rotary Cut Fabric Strips
For those who haven’t tried, or those who are worried about not doing things correctly.

Before you begin rotary cutting, you'll need to square up one end of the fabric, making its edge a 90-degree angle to the fold.
- Fold the fabric along its length, selvages together. The fold should be straight, with no puckers although the selvages might not be perfectly aligned. If you are working on a small rotary mat, you may need to fold the fabric again, making it four layers deep. However, I recommend that “Beginning quilters” should stick to one fold, because each new fold makes inaccurate cuts more likely...that’s when dog legs come into the equation !!!
- Place the fabric on your rotary mat with the fold near the bottom edge of the mat and the side to be squared on the left.
- Place your ruler on the fabric, checking to make sure horizontal lines on your ruler are parallel to the fold.( and checking that your desired measurement e.g. 4&1/2” is aligned to the edge of the fabric.
- Place your hand on your ruler to hold it firmly in place and roll a rotary cutter from bottom to top along the ruler's right edge i.e. away from you. Spread your fingers out to hold the ruler securely, but take care to keep them out of the path of the cutter. The fabric's cut edge should now be at a 90-degree angle to the folded edge.
- Before you make further cuts, check to be sure that the left and bottom edges of the fabric align with vertical and horizontal markings on the ruler. If they do not, square up the end again before cutting more strips.
If you are left -handed, work from the opposite side of the fabric, placing your ruler in mirror-image positions.
My preferred cutter is the Olfa ergonomic cutter which has an automatic retractable blade. That is the blade is not exposed unless you have pressure on the handle. It also has a lock button on it which makes for safe carrying in your basket/bag as the blade won’t come out whilst in the lock position. This cutter can be used by left or right handers simply by switching the blade to the other side. When changing your blade lay out the pieces as you take them off, then you will be sure that it is assembled correctly.
Did you realise that with much cutting your blade becomes a little loose? Don’t forget to tighten the screw/nut occasionally.
If totally stressed out by beginning cutting, try making some projects with jelly rolls, layer cakes or 5” squares so that you can ease into cutting by cutting smaller pieces.
Tip 2.
Sometimes the new fusible web is more difficult to separate then the old vliesofix. Generally I can separate it easily by placing a little “dog ear” in one corner and it springs apart. It gives more trouble if you re iron after noticing you haven’t fused it properly in the first place. If it is stubborn try this trick. Turn your cut out piece over and score it heavily with a quilting pin. It will then separate quite easily.

November - December 2010 Newsletter
another slightly late newsletter. I don’t know where the months disappear to. It’s been a very busy month with quilt market (which helped me gain some new shops to wholesale to), and getting all those orders out as well as being out of town for a few days.

New fabrics:- Sweet Broderie by Rosalie Quinlan- these fabrics are quite a departure from my usual stock. Very fresh and will suit the young ones.
I now stock patterns by Jennifer Knol...delightful appliqué patterns and some superb bag patterns. Hopefully they are on my blog by the time you receive this newsletter.

I have the full range of 80 colors, beautiful variegated shades, but be quick as limited quantities of each color. I have ordered more today of many of the colors which should be in soon.

New Mystery: “Picnic Time For Bears” You are still able to join in this mystery, but the later you leave it the more the fabrics may change. At this stage the only change is the arch fabric. Stage 1 “Pattern only” is available @ $23.10. The following stages will be cheaper, with the whole pattern being $66.00. Of course being a mystery it is not possible to buy the whole pattern set yet. If you wish to pay the full amount, pattern stages will eb sent to you when the kit stages are sent out to others. Tips for this newsletter: 1. When making a design that has repeat blocks or motifs, just make one to ensure you have not made a mistake or that your pattern doesn’t contain an error. It’s not much use repeating the same mistake multiple times.2. Making your own quilt labels: I like to use freezer paper ( if needle turning my label) or fusible web when writing my quilt label (with e.g. a micron pigma pen) as it gives stability to the fabric. Sometimes I print out the text from my computer, place it under the label fabric but over a light box, then the print is more "respectable". If you want your "own hand", perhaps rule lines on the backing paper before adhering to the fabric, to keep your text level. If time permits I like to include an applique or sketch of a figure that is featured on the quilt top...generally a scaled down version.

November newsletter progress
I am more than a little behind with the November newsletter as I have not been 100% since coming back from Quilt Market. It is basically done but I had wanted to include some new things on my blog ( not quite happening yet !!!)Will combine November and December, and hope to get some blog things posted next week. Glad some hints have been helpful....thanks Raewyn for your feedback re the October newsletter.
