News: Inspiring designer No 1. Kim Diehl

Kim is my featured designer in my February newsletter.
Kim Diehl has for many years impressed me with her beautiful designs.
Her color choices  used in her scrappy look quilts -generally with a mixture of piecing and applique to suit all levels of quilter- are a delight.
Her books are crammed with designs for a variety of quilting projects......particularly wall, bed and lap quilts. with full page colored photos and  colored photos of piecing and applique steps to supplement her excellent instructions.
The tips she offers with regard to fabric selection and the principles of quilting are excellent.
If you haven't tried  a Kim Diehl pattern, you would not be disappointed if you did. Books retails around the $50ish mark although one of the patterns on my blog ( Country Whig Rose) is $12.50....that's the one I am making at present. Hopefully my photo and pricing of kits will be available to view on my blog by the end of March- next newsletter date.

I am currently making this up with some of my lovely autumn toned fabrics. Made with your choice of applique ( of course I am doing it with hand done blanket stitch for the texture I so love). Simple piecing and appliqued borders.

This title has close to 150 pages with fantastic full color photos of the finished projects as well as colored photos to aid the piecing instructions. In addition to the stunning array of quilts and other projects Kim provides some ideas on fabric selection, principles of quiltmaking and finishing techniques. Some of the projects include:3 Bed quilts, 6 lap quilts, 3 wall quilts, a table topper and a doll quilt. The projects are a combination of applique ( using your favorite method) and piecing.

As for "Simple Traditions" this book (within its 130 pages) also has valuable ideas on fabric selection, quilt making principles and hints. There are many projects in this book including wall quilts, bed quilts, lap quilts runners and a doll quilt. Kim uses her usual techniques of applique combined with piecing.
